Why did I attend Coleman College?
I decided to go back to school to get into the IT field. Programming did not really interest me, so I got into the Networking side, the old CAN (Computer Applications and Networks) program to be specific. I chose Coleman for a variety of reasons. First was its reputation. My wife actually suggested I look into Coleman after seeing ads on TV and around town. Second, after talking with several of the other schools around, I preferred Coleman's approach of teaching the fundamentals rather than teaching people how to pass a certification exam. Most, if not all of the other schools at that time (Summer, 2001) were teaching straight Microsoft classes in preparation for the MCSE as well as teaching the answers to other exams like the A+, N+, CCNA, etc. What I liked about Coleman's philosophy was that by getting a more fundamentally sound education plus plenty of hands-on practice, a graduate would be better prepared to take a position in not only a Microsoft or Cisco environment, but also a Unix or Novell one as well. I am glad I chose Coleman. After graduation I found myself working as a Supervisor for a major computer manufacturer's help desk, and while interviewing candidates found that those from Coleman invariably "knew their stuff" while others from some of the other schools in town did not, despite having certifications indicating they did. Now, over five years later, I am a Network Administrator working as a contractor with the US Army in Kuwait, after having spent two years doing the same thing with the same company, ITT Industries, in Iraq. Thank you, Coleman College!
