Bioinformatics Technician (BIT)

Core Program

The Bioinformatics Technician Program (BIT) at Coleman College is designed to provide students with the skills that are required for careers in the growing field of bioinformatics. The BIT program combines fundamental concepts in computer information sciences, networking and bioinformatics. Students will be skilled in computer information systems, programming, database administration and resources, mathematics, statistics as well as biology and biotechnology. Students will have an understanding in hardware, software, programming concepts, network infrastructure, Web site development and various programming languages. Students will also learn to solve the types of inquiry-based problems that are critical to the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. This will include knowledge of the development and maintenance of public and proprietary databases, application of software to solve biological problems, as well as gene finding and expression analysis. The skills and training achieved by students earning a BIT certificate will position them for employment in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries as well as in academic research institutes engaged in biotechnology-related research.
