Faculty Spotlight: Leticia Rabor

Leticia worked as a professional Software and Systems Engineer in the Defense and Aerospace industries for over 13 years such as BAE Systems National Solutions, Lockheed Martin, and Science Application International Corporation (SAIC). Over the years, she has designed, implemented, and tested various image formation subsystem components for ground system development. She has done full object-oriented designs in C/C++ and Java, as well as developing test procedures with inter-process and multiple process communication. Leticia has drawn up and continues to develop some Mobile apps that are currently in the Google Play Store and Amazon Marketplace.

She has been working for Coleman since 2012 and has produced more than half of the courses within the Software Development Department. At Coleman, she teaches Programming Concept and Logic, Object-Oriented Programming, Mobile Development, Systems Design and Implementation, Software Testing, and Client-Side Scripting. She is currently developing a Coleman University mobile app that will provide access to its academic student services including course registration, financial aid, career services, and academics. She is also the faculty advocate for the Software Development Club. She currently is proposing a Software Code Jam that will allow students to imagine, code, and learn together in a team-based environment during a 48-hour development phase.

Leticia also conducts yearly external one hour workshops in mobile development and JavaScript/JQuery including the Geek Girls Tech Conference of San Diego, California. She also participated as one of the panel experts for “The future of mobile development” topic in June 2015 which was videotaped and published on Geek Girl TV.

The Cybersecurity Club Gets a New Identity!

The Cybersecurity Club at Coleman University will henceforth be known as… Team Antikythera! You may be thinking, “Team What?!” and to answer your question, Team Antikythera is named after the Antikythera Mechanism, the earliest known mechanical analog computer. In ancient Greece, it was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes, as well as the Olympiads; the cycles of the ancient Olympic Games.

Over 2,000 years later, the mechanism was discovered in a shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, and now resides at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.

Like the mechanism, Team Antikythera is the first of its kind at Coleman University. Its purpose is to bring students together for the opportunity to gain real world, practical experience in configuring, defending and attacking computer networks.  As well as to facilitate open communication between participants of various backgrounds of experience.  This will help alleviate stress for new students while honing the skills of senior students and Alumni.  Participation in study groups for classes and IT Certifications, and Penetration Lab events will be a mainstay of the program.

After the name change, the next step for Team Antikythera to fully utilize its new identity was to create a logo. Instead of just a wordmark, an icon was preferred in order to incorporate some of the visual components of the Antikythera mechanism. The goal was to create an icon that could stand on its own, avoiding a direct illustration of the mechanism, while still displaying a clear connection to it. The most prominent pieces of the technical schematic were used, shown below, and the logo grew from that center element.

After the two main circular & crossed shapes were isolated, smaller elements were brought in, and the mechanism was abstracted further. A lot of possibilities emerged, but Team Antikythera held the deciding vote in what was to be their new logo & icon. The team went with the one of the least abstracted logos, sticking close to the analog roots of their new chosen name.

Cybersecurity Club First Meeting

The all-new Cybersecurity Club at Coleman University meets this Wednesday at 4pm in the Library. This student-led club offers Network & Cybersecurity students a chance to meet others in their program and form study groups for certification and classroom tests.

From the club president:

As Network Security/Cybersecurity Students, we need a way to network with each other.  Forming study groups for taking Certification & Classroom tests, meeting professionals in the field, etc.  There is a lot out there for us right now and the world is changing everyday.  We need tools to help us keep up and one of the first places we should look at is ourselves.
