September 2nd 2009
September 2, 1969: Forty years ago today, in Leonard Kleinrock's UCLA lab, a group of computer scientists managed to pass bits of data from one computer to another over some gray cable. In doing so, they created the first node of what we now call (long dramatic pause)... the Internet.
Kleinrock and colleagues were working with the government-backed Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), without which I would not be blogging these words today.
Now, some folks believe the actual "birthday" was October 29, 1969 - when Kleinrock sent the first message between two nodes, UCLA to Stanford. The message? "LO." As in "LO AND BEHOLD, THE INTERNET." Well, okay, not really. It was supposed to be "LOGIN" but the system crashed after Kleinrock typed "L" and "O."

IT predictions: What’s in and what’s out for 2009
by Jason Hiner
Jason has organized this list into counterpoints, trends that will be “IN” and related trends that will be on their way “OUT” during 2009. These are not absolutes. The INs will not be ubiquitous and the OUTs won’t be extinct. The rule of thumb here is that for the INs you’ll see more of them in 2009 than you saw in 2008, while you’ll see less of the OUTs in 2009 than you did last year. So here we go…
IN: Web-based applications - OUT: Build-it-yourself custom software
IN: Automating processes to save money - OUT: Long-term projects
IN: Macs in the enterprise - OUT: Upgrading XP machines to Vista
IN: Virtualization - OUT: Infinite racks of small servers
IN: Core i7 - OUT: The Pentium brand
IN: Thin clients - OUT: A laptop for every knowledge worker
IN: WiMAX - OUT: Metro Wi-Fi
IN: Ubuntu - OUT: Red Hat
IN: Business Intelligence (BI) - OUT: SNMP data overload
IN: Telecommuting - OUT: The 8-5 work day
IN: HP laptops and desktops - OUT: Dell laptops and desktops
IN: Multifunction server appliances - OUT: Best-of-breed network devices
IN: Smartphones - OUT: Desktop-replacement notebooks
IN: Video conferencing - OUT: Air travel for a single meeting
IN: More internships - OUT: Filling open positions
IN: Conserving energy - OUT: Building IT for future growth
IN: WAN acceleration - OUT: Dark fiber
IN: 3G broadband - OUT: Frame relay
IN: Netbooks - OUT: Desktop PCs
IN: Microsoft Office on the Web - OUT: Azure, Live Mesh, and Windows Live
IN: CIOs with minimal tech background - OUT: CIO as lead engineer
IN: IT/business integration - OUT: Centralized IT departments

A Look at Tomorrows Technology
By Jonathan Sidener
UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER
Yahoo software developer Dan Theurer set up his Bluetooth phone yesterday to communicate with his blog, as did several friends and colleagues attending ETech, an emerging-technology conference at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina.
In one of many admittedly geeky demonstrations at the three-day conference that ended March 5th, the wireless Bluetooth phones detected one another in the conference meeting rooms and formed an impromptu social network. Theurer could see lists of blogs read by the others in the temporary network.
At the seventh annual ETech, there's less worry about what sticks to the wall and more focus on having something cool to throw. The conference is a gathering of more than 1,200 programmers, engineers, executives, hackers, academics and others trying to chart the course of technology.

Etech 2008
March 3-6 2008, San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina
Now in its seventh year, the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference hones in on the ideas, projects, and technologies that the alpha geeks are thinking about, hacking on, and inventing right now, creating a space for all participants to connect and be inspired. ETechs past have covered peer-to-peer networks to person-to-person mobile messaging, web services to weblogs, big-screen digital media to small-screen mobile gaming, hardware hacking to content remixing. We've hacked, blogged, ripped, remixed, tracked back, and tagged to the nth. Expect much of what you see in early form here to show up in the products and services you're taking for granted in the not-too-distant future.
ETech balances blue-sky theorizing with practical, real-world information and conversation. Tutorials and breakout sessions will help you inject inspiration into your own projects, while keynotes and hallway conversation will spark enough unconventional thinking to change how you see your world.
