Daybreak Games Welcomes Coleman Students to Their Studio in San Diego

On December 4, Coleman University faculty member Joe Shoopack took his DSN343 (Game Story and Character Design) class, along with other interested Coleman Game Development students, to visit Daybreak Game Company in Rancho Bernardo. Through his connections to the company, he arranged for a panel discussion and presentation about game design and story narrative creation between his students and Daybreak developers.  Daybreak was founded in 2015, and since then they have been making their mark on the gaming industry.  Published games from Daybreak include EverQuest®, EverQuest® II, PlanetSide® 2, and DC Universe Online™. Team members and representatives from Daybreak have come to our campus in the past to speak with students and present workshops on what it takes to be a successful game developer.

Luke Sigmund, EverQuest Franchise Creative Director for Daybreak Games, hosted the event for Coleman students, and was one of the panelists along with four other senior members of the game story team. The presentation covered creating compelling narrative and character design, the relationship of game play and story narrative, the process of creating/designing story worlds for open world games, creating emotion with character interaction, and other related topics. In addition the Daybreak team held discussions with our students about how to find a job as a game designer and best practices for preparing for a career in the game development field. The panel-style presentation stimulated interesting discussion and was a valuable opportunity for students to meet and interact with professional game developers. Our students benefit enormously from the connections that our faculty have with the local game development community. This event highlights the great dedication our faculty has to helping our students learn not just in the classroom, but from professionals in their field who can offer their experiences as learning tools.

How Do I Sign Up for the Global Game Jam 2018??

We’ve already talked about the Global Game Jam on this blog; and the fact that this opportunity to compete in a global challenge with other gamers is one that can’t be missed. So now that we’ve peaked your interest, this blog will tell you what you should know about the #GGJ2018 and what to prepare for once you’ve signed up.

To start with, we want to tell you what your ticket purchase includes. The hosts of the Global Game Jam event at Coleman, the IGDA, have dedicated the funds from the event to providing food for the participants as well as other resources to help make this event as awesome as possible for all who attend! Starting Friday evening on January 26, 2018 participants will start arriving at the Coleman campus to set up their equipment and find spots to get settled in. You can bring in your own computers, laptops, and monitors to use for the weekend as well as any other special resources that you need to effectively code or design. Since the participants will be here from Friday night to Sunday afternoon Coleman University has not only provided campus space for this event, we will be making sure that there is a computer for everyone who registers. The point of this event is to mimic the conditions and stresses of game design and development so make sure that you come prepared to work hard, but we want you to be comfortable while doing it! So if you prefer to code in your bunny slippers, make sure to bring them along too.

What if you don’t have any team members lined up when you register? Well that is certainly no problem. Once the theme for the challenge is announced on Friday night, participants will then have the opportunity to discuss their ideas with others, and teams will form based on which projects participants want to join. The proposed projects will not all be videogame based because board games, card games, and any other styles of game are all welcome submissions. Since the submissions don’t have to be a videogame, participants who do not have coding experience are not excluded from being a part of this event. A passion for gaming and creating fun projects is the only requirement needed! The fun comes from the thrill of joining a team and bringing a great game to life in only three days.

Once teams have finished their projects, they will be submitted to the Global Game Jam site and published. Visitors to the site can still see games from previous years and even play some of them as well! For a game developer or designer, this can be a great addition to any resume and will add invaluable experience to help put you ahead. Being able to perfect your teamwork and problem solving skills while also creating a game from scratch is something that many recruiters look for in a potential hire. If your family or friends are interested in seeing the event and coming by to show support, they are more than welcome! There will be visiting hours for friends and family, however, since time is limited and teams will have to work around the clock, visitors will not be able to stay overnight. We will also have special guests from radio station FM 94.9 on our campus live streaming and getting involved with participants. Hamby from the Casual Gamers podcast will be on our campus broadcasting from his Twitch channel, so you definitely don’t want to miss out on that! Tips for Developing a Well-Crafted Resume

At Coleman University, our diverse student population includes those seeking their first job, returning veterans, students interested in changing careers, and individuals returning to the workforce after a leave of absence. What they all have in common is the need to create an appealing, professional resume that catches an employer’s eye.

Today, employers spend only a few seconds on each resume they receive. Therefore, employees need to develop a resume that differentiates their work background from the competition. Coleman’s career services advisors work one-on-one with students to provide personalized professional development services, and our experience shows that when it comes to resumes, one size does not necessarily fit all.  There are requirements and recommendations that we have for each of our programs. What suits your resume is not guaranteed to work for your peers. The basics of a resume are the same, however each resume is unique. If you need help updating your resume or would like to have it reviewed make time to visit your Career Services Advisor as soon as possible so that we can help you get into the career you really want.

Candidates should thoroughly read the job description and tailor their resume to the needs of the company. Is the company interested only in candidates that hold a specific degree or certification? Does the company require candidates to submit a portfolio of their work? At Coleman, our graphic design and game development and design students are encouraged to refine their portfolios and post them online, so that they are easily accessible to employers. You do not need to bring an arsenal of technology and handouts to go with your resumes, but keep in mind that employers will search for your name online and it is pertinent to ensure that what they find will not disqualify you as a candidate. Update your portfolios, websites, or any other digital media that you curate, before you begin submitting resumes.

Keep in mind that many large and small companies utilize applicant tracking systems to assist in their recruiting efforts. These systems search for key words in your resume to add to their database. It is important that candidates include those key words from the job description so that they are not automatically disqualified before they even meet with an employer.

What other aspects should be considered when writing a resume?

  • Formatting is important. You may want to research resumes from peers in your field to determine whether there is a certain outline that should be followed, or speak with a career advisor. Use (but don’t overuse) bullet points. Avoid graphics, large blocks of single-spaced text, and varying font sizes.
  • Proper grammar and punctuation is critical. There is no place for slang words in a resume. If you have questions about grammar or punctuation, check out grammar books from the local library, view online sources, or seek out a career advisor or trusted friend for advice.
  • Place name, phone number(s), address, and e-mail address in the top left-hand corner. Create a professional e-mail address and take a professional photo for social media sites.
  • Write a succinct profile that highlights work experiences and the skills you have to offer an employer. This profile should entice a hiring manager to read further.
  • Resumes no longer include an objective. Instead, we recommend students write a summary of their skills, using bullet points to identify all the relevant abilities that pertain to the job for which they are applying.
  • The work experience section of the resume should include dates of employment in reverse chronological order, the name of organization, the physical location of the employer (city and state), the title of the position, and description of work responsibilities. Under each position, emphasize specific results generated (how you reduced costs, increased sales, overcame a challenge) and use action verbs.
  • Maintain a simple and direct resume. Do not exaggerate your experience or your qualifications as that is a good way to put yourself in a work situation that you may not be ready to handle. Be honest and concise with the information that you put onto your resume as it sets the tone for what an employer can expect from you as a potential employee, including your work ethics.
  • The Career Services Department strongly suggests avoiding using a template for your resume. Downloaded or borrowed templates are not guaranteed to look the same after they are sent off and employers will notice immediately if you have sent in a template resume, which will not work in your favor.

If you experienced a gap in employment due to illness or caring for a family member, be prepared to give a short response that explains the situation. Business Insider gives 3 tips for addressing a job gap: be honest and upfront, consider doing volunteer work or taking relevant classes, and, explain the skills acquired while you were out of work. Gaps in employment are not necessarily viewed as negative if it can be explained how time away from the workforce has strengthened your background as the perfect candidate for the job.

  • The education section should include the name of the institution, dates attended, and degree or degrees earned. Remember to include the major, minor, and important certifications. Make mention of academic awards if they are applicable to the position. Include a GPA if it is higher than 3.0, or if you do not have previous work experience.
  • Veterans are often concerned how to transferring their military experience into civilian terms. Many skills gained in the military, such as organization, leadership, responsibility, and technical ability can be easily translated to a civilian job.
  • Make sure that you include everything that an employer asks for with your resume submission, which may include a cover letter. The Harvard Business Review suggests a list of important cover letter aspects that will make your resume stand out. The Career Services Advisors at Coleman are here to help you with drafting your cover letters. Again, it is important that you make time to speak with them as soon as possible in order to be completely prepared for your career search.

Now that you have an understanding of what to include in a resume, we recommend omitting the following information:

  • Personal information, such as age, marital status, race, or number of dependent children need not be included. Hobbies should be mentioned, only if they are applicable to the job. There is also no need to include high school graduation information.
  • Irrelevant work history and nonessential extracurricular activities should not be listed. Think of your resume as your personal “elevator speech.” Only include work experience that highlights relevant skills and experience.
  • All employers expect job applicants to have references, so there is no need to include a statement such as, “References will be furnished upon request.”
  • It has become a more common practice among employers to seek out the private social media profiles of candidates in order to gain better insight into an applicant’s background. However, there is no need to include links or information pertaining to your personal social media profiles on your resume. It can be beneficial to include a link to your LinkedIn profile, so make sure that you have updated your LinkedIn before you start applying to employment opportunities. However, that is not something you are required to provide as part of a resume submission.

While we all live in a fast-paced world, it is important to take time with the resume process. Developing a carefully constructed resume could be the difference between hiring you, or the competition, for the next “dream” job.

What Does it Take to Become a Graphic Designer in San Diego?

Nearly 30,000 graphic designers work in California, the state with the highest employment level in the field 1.  We recently interviewed Scott Norton, program director for Graphic Design at Coleman, regarding the questions he most often receives about pursuing a design career in San Diego.

Do you need a degree to become a graphic designer?
Obtaining a design degree is important, as employers seek individuals that have mastered tools such as the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, PhotoShop, Indesign), which is taught at Coleman. Students also learn fundamental design principles so that students have a working knowledge of the technical aspects of design. In addition, Coleman teaches digital imagery, web and multimedia, vector graphics and typography.

“The advantage of becoming a graphic designer is that the skills you obtain in the classroom can be applied to a wide variety of careers in advertising, web design or game development,” Norton said.

Throughout a student’s career at Coleman, the career services department, as well as graphic design instructors, are available to provide practical advice on creating a resume and developing a portfolio. In 2015, the College Scorecard, an interactive online tool established by the U.S. Department of Education to assist families with college decision-making, ranked Coleman “above average” for high graduation rates and high salary upon degree completion.

How difficult is it to become a successful designer?
“Successful designers make it their passion,” said Norton. “They are constantly working on projects, whether in class or at home. And, they capitalize on social media to help them with their networking.”

While employers still want to see the traditional artist portfolio in-person, the web has become the new tool in showcasing an artist’s talent. DeviantArt.com is the largest online social community for artists and art enthusiasts to display their photos, digital art or paintings. Those interested in comic book creative are flocking to sites like Penciljack.com and DigitalWebbing.com. Employers are utilizing the web, also, often turning to Instagram in search of the next big designer.

However, Norton believes that good old-fashioned networking is still critical for new designers, especially self-employed freelancers. “You never know when the next job opportunity will present itself,” he said. “The key is to stay active in the community, network with others and maintain a positive attitude.” If a client is pleased with your work, sending a hand-written thank you note and asking for a referral are gestures will help generate word-of-mouth about your reputation as a solid designer.

What if I’m not interested in a traditional graphic design job?
The growing popularity of comic-inspired movies, the annual Comic-Con International Convention in San Diego, and a recent Washington Post story on record-setting sales for comic books in June, are inspiring a whole new crop of young people to pursue a career in this exciting industry. “The success of leading comic book artists such as Annie Wu and Tradd Moore, is the result of their working harder for longer than other artists in the field,” said Norton. “Comic creative is fiercely competitive, which is why I tell students to continue to take on traditional jobs and seek out networking opportunities that will lead you closer to your ‘dream job.’”

How would you characterize the current job climate for graphic designers in San Diego?
San Diego represents a large and diversified economic landscape. It is home to a booming tourism industry, military and civilian technology, more than 430 biotech firms, and 13 area chambers of commerce in that represent thousands of small businesses. This rich, diverse community lends itself to a myriad of job opportunities for graphic designers.

Scott was joined by Michelle Currier, winner of the CW6 Comic-Con Art Contest. Coleman University had the unique privilege to sponsor this great contest and we congratulate Michelle on her winning entry.

Coleman University’s Associate of Science Graphic Design (ASGD) degree immerses students in the fundamentals of Graphic Design and applied visual communication. Graduates of this degree program will possess key skills that individual students may leverage into a wide variety of career paths in print and web media, advertising, content development, entertainment and art. This program emphasizes the commercial application of design and is designed specifically to accelerate the professional success of the designers who graduate.

Faculty Spotlight: Randall Cornish

Randall Cornish

Randall Cornish

Randall Cornish is an instructor in the College of Graphic Design at Coleman University. He teaches Graphic Design Principles, Layout and Typography.

Mr. Cornish has worked professionally in the field of graphic design since 1976. He is an award-winning educator who has been teaching graphic design part-time since 1998. He is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and an Adobe Certified Expert.

In 2016, he received an Award of Distinction (http://tinyurl.com/j5wfanr) for logo design from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts in New York City. In 2008, he received an American Graphic Design Award for poster design from Graphic Design USA magazine. Mr. Cornish is an honors and holds a degree in Visual Arts and Communications.

“As an educator, my dream is to encourage and inspire students to pursue excellence and unleash the power of their imagination,” says Mr. Cornish.

The Cybersecurity Club Gets a New Identity!

The Cybersecurity Club at Coleman University will henceforth be known as… Team Antikythera! You may be thinking, “Team What?!” and to answer your question, Team Antikythera is named after the Antikythera Mechanism, the earliest known mechanical analog computer. In ancient Greece, it was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for calendrical and astrological purposes, as well as the Olympiads; the cycles of the ancient Olympic Games.

Over 2,000 years later, the mechanism was discovered in a shipwreck off the Greek island of Antikythera, and now resides at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.

Like the mechanism, Team Antikythera is the first of its kind at Coleman University. Its purpose is to bring students together for the opportunity to gain real world, practical experience in configuring, defending and attacking computer networks.  As well as to facilitate open communication between participants of various backgrounds of experience.  This will help alleviate stress for new students while honing the skills of senior students and Alumni.  Participation in study groups for classes and IT Certifications, and Penetration Lab events will be a mainstay of the program.

After the name change, the next step for Team Antikythera to fully utilize its new identity was to create a logo. Instead of just a wordmark, an icon was preferred in order to incorporate some of the visual components of the Antikythera mechanism. The goal was to create an icon that could stand on its own, avoiding a direct illustration of the mechanism, while still displaying a clear connection to it. The most prominent pieces of the technical schematic were used, shown below, and the logo grew from that center element.

After the two main circular & crossed shapes were isolated, smaller elements were brought in, and the mechanism was abstracted further. A lot of possibilities emerged, but Team Antikythera held the deciding vote in what was to be their new logo & icon. The team went with the one of the least abstracted logos, sticking close to the analog roots of their new chosen name.
